Wokingham Town Centre Regeneration

At last night’s Council meeting Wokingham Borough Council’s Conservatives blocked any debate on Lib Dem proposals setting out how Wokingham Town centre regeneration could be better achieved.

Leader of the Lib Dems, Cllr Prue Bray (Winnersh ward) has spearheaded the ongoing, consistent and well supported public campaign to Save Elms Field and improve the Town Centre Regeneration plan. Prue said “We organised a rally, set up a petition and forced the Conservatives to hold a special Council Meeting to debate the issues. We listened to local people’s views, held public meetings and offered alternative ideas. The result of our campaign was that the Conservatives had to rethink their unpopular Regeneration plans.

Conservative Cllr Phillip Mirfin’s suggestion at the Council meeting, that the Lib Dems are not interested in his latest Peach Place plans is both insulting and yet so far from the truth it is laughable. Because of us the plans for Peach Place have been changed. They are now much better although we still think the Conservatives are wrong to remove the Rose Street car park. Cllr Mirfin has said that Elms Field will still be built on. The Lib Dems will continue to campaign to keep the green space and to give residents a voice in deciding what should happen to Wokingham Town Centre.

How ridiculous for him to claim we are not interested in the Town Centre when we had put an item about it on the Agenda and the Conservatives voted to go home rather than discuss it. It just shows the Conservatives in their true colours, they would rather play political games than work with us to get the best for Wokingham town.
