Wokingham's New Bin Bag Scheme

An 80 litre blue bag and 60 litre white bag
which do you think is bigger?
From the 1st of April 2012 Wokingham Borough Council will be changing the way it collects our waste.

What you need to know:

  • Rubbish collection will remain weekly, but your rubbish will only be picked up if it's put out using one of the Council's new official blue sacks (shown right).
  • You'll be given 80, 80 litre, sacks per year. If you don't receive them soon, by the 27th of March at the latest,  phone Wokingham Direct on 0118 974 6000.and ask when they'll be delivered.
  • Households of 5 or more are entitled to claim 20  more bags. Call 0118 974 6000 to claim.
  • You can buy more bags if you need them at a cost £4 for 10 bags. The council claims it is selling the bags at cost, however, bags of the same specification from a local supermarket would most likely be cheaper. To order more bags call  0118 909 9360.
  • Early reports suggest the new blue bags may not be the promised 80 litres in size, we are investigating, see photo comparison of a 60 litre bag and the new 80 litre bags above for a visual size comparison.
  • Green waste will be an opt in scheme costing £60 per year. For this you will be provided with a green wheelie bin which will be emptied once every two weeks. This is despite the bins costing the council only £25 and Reading running a similar scheme for a one off charge of £32.50.
  • If you don't want to pay £60 you can, alternatively, buy paper bags costing £1 for occasional green waste removal. As a matter of interest the paper bags cost the council 15p.
  • We suspect the scheme may be illegal; because forcing residents to buy waste sacks from one supplier (the council) is a monopoly.
  • Residents using wheelie bins should note the council says it  will no longer empty them.  Apparently the new trucks can't handle them - but could the old ones?!
  • Lastly, remember Earley Town Council provides some skips for green waste, see the Town Council's website for more information at  www.earley-tc.gov.uk
