Lib Dems file objection to Conservatives' plans for housing around Carnival Pool
Cllr Prue Bray at Elms Field, the last of Wokingham's Green space, most of which is set to developed.
The Leader of the Lib Dem Group at Wokingham Borough Council, Prue Bray has put in a formal objection to the Conservatives' plans for housing on the area around Carnival Pool in Wokingham.
The idea of including housing in a revamp of the area around Carnival Pool was slipped in to the latest draft of Wokingham Borough Council's planning policy in June, without any public consultation or discussion. The Council has an existing masterplan for the town which reserves the land for leisure use.
Prue Bray says "We did know that the Conservatives are planning to build a multi-storey car park at the swimming pool, but they have never mentioned any possibility of building houses around there before. They have just sneaked it in at almost the final stage of preparing the Council's planning policy. We don't know how many houses or how much of the site they want to use. No developer could casually ask for an extra housing site and expect to get away with it. So why does the council think it should be allowed to do it itself? It is bad enough that they want to build houses on the green space at Elms Field. Now they are moving on to Carnival Pool. They are supposed to be running Council services, but it seems they would rather be property developers instead."
