Closure of the Maiden Over Pub

The Maiden Over public house on Silverdale Road has closed.

Its owners, Enterprise Inns, have decided the pub is not viable and offered a long lease of the site to Tesco, which has already delivered a letter announcing the possible opening of a Tesco Express.

The Earley Liberal Democrats support the action group 'Maiden Its Not Over' set up following the closure of the Maiden Over. The action group has a Facebook page of the same name (link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/667522626658772)

Clive Jones, the Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate (PPC) for Wokingham, has said "I have worked with two Liberal Democrat members of CAMRA to nominate the Maiden Over as a community asset.

Hopefully this will stop any development of the Maiden Over site by Tesco. My feeling is that we don't need another local store in the area. We already have several Tesco's, Sainsbury's, Co-ops and of course McColl's. we don't need more.

"If anything we have a lack of local pubs. The Maiden Over has been an important part of the community in Earley for many years. Certainly for all of the 40 years that I have lived in the area".

Wokingham Borough Council has now confirmed receipt of CAMRA's nomination of the Maiden Over as an asset of community value.

If you wish to support registering the Maiden Over as a community asset please send your comments to development.control@wokingham.gov.uk before August 20th.
